Proteins play a crucial role in our health and especially in building muscle. They are the building blocks of our body and are necessary for the repair and growth of tissue. During training, tiny tears occur in the muscle fibres, which are repaired and strengthened by amino acids derived from proteins. This leads to muscle growth, which is particularly important for athletes and bodybuilders.
Proteins also offer other health benefits. They can stabilise blood sugar levels, which is particularly important for diabetics. Proteins also contribute to satiety, which can help to control appetite and therefore make it easier to lose weight. They can also lower blood pressure and improve blood lipid levels, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. The recommended amount of protein varies depending on age, gender and physical activity. However, for physically active people, especially those who do strength training, the requirement can increase to 1.5 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogramme of body weight to cover the increased need for muscle repair and growth.
Important: Food supplements are only ever a supplement to a balanced and healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle.
It is easy to lose track of all the different ESN proteins. Many questions often arise about ESN proteins.
- Which protein powder before or after training?
- At what time do I need which ESN protein?
- Which ESN protein is lactose-free?
- Are ESN proteins vegan?
- How quickly is the protein absorbed by the body?
Whether it's Designer Whey, ISOCLEAR, Iso Whey, Vegan Designer Protein or ISOCLEAR Vegan. All ESN proteins have their raison d'être with very special benefits.
For example, the whey concentrate is produced by ultrafiltration - a process in which liquid whey is pressed through a filter and then dried. Whey isolate, on the other hand, is obtained by crossflow microfiltration - a particularly gentle filtering process. The difference therefore lies in the different filtration processes and therefore also in the nutrient profile, i.e. the protein, fat and lactose content.
In addition, ESN proteins all have a different absorption rate.
The figure below summarises all the important differences between ESN proteins.
Quick reminder: Proteins support you in building muscle, but also in maintaining it, e.g. if you are on a diet, and also contribute to longer satiety. We recommend that you consume 1.5 g to 2 g of protein per kg of body weight every day.
Goals and individual requirements
Everyone has different goals and requirements. The differences between the products are therefore explained below. You can find more detailed information about the product on the product page or in the respective Help Centre article. This is linked to the respective product.
Muscle building
Proteins contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, so it is essential to ensure your daily protein intake. In principle, any of our protein powders can fulfil this purpose.
The ESN Designer Whey
However, if you are looking for a protein powder that impresses with its outstanding quality, excellent amino acid profile and excellent flavour, we recommend Designer Whey. It is Germany's No. 1 whey and offers unbeatable value for money. Designer Whey is usually mixed with milk.
Thanks to the many flavours, you can look forward to an irresistible milkshake taste and plenty of variety. Almond Coconut, Cherry Yogurt, Milk Chocolate, Cinnamon Cereal and many more make your daily protein intake easier. We do not add any sugar and instead use harmless sweeteners.
Designer Whey can be taken before, after or at any time of the day. Designer Whey contains lactose and is unsuitable for people with a lactose intolerance.
The ESN Flexpresso
ESN Flex presso is our protein coffee. ESN Flexpresso combines high-quality whey protein and real coffee to create a high-protein coffee. ESN Flexpresso is similar to a designer whey protein but, as the name suggests, contains coffee. This can be a great addition to a high-protein diet, especially in the morning. Important to note: ESN Flexpresso contains caffeine (except the Decaf variant).
ESN IsoClear Whey Protein Isolate
Our ESN ISOCLEAR is a patented whey protein isolate that tastes fruity, delicious and refreshing. This is because ISOCLEAR uses innovative food technology processes to virtually remove fat, lactose, unwanted minerals and undesirable whey flavour carriers. The result? A refreshing protein drink that tastes like a soft drink. This is also where it differs from Designer Whey. If you don't want to or can't use milk, ESN IsoClear would be your best choice. Many customers also report that the flavour in water is like a lemonade. So you can easily reach your daily protein intake.
Together with ESN IsoWhey Protein Isolate, ESN IsoClear is the highest quality protein product we offer. The amino acid balance is excellent and the proteins are absorbed quickly. This is why many people also use ESN IsoClear during training. However, ESN IsoClear can also be taken at any time of the day.
ESN IsoWhey Protein Isolate
ESN IsoWhey Protein Isolate is a classic protein isolate. A protein isolate is characterised by its high value and a low fat and carbohydrate content. The product is comparable to IsoClear, but the difference lies in the flavours and the manufacturing process. IsoWhey protein isolate contains lactose and is usually mixed with milk. The value is even slightly better than that of IsoClear. It contains a little more protein per 100g. ESN IsoWhey is available in classic designer whey flavours.
ESN Fruity Whey Isolate
ESN Fruity Whey Isolate offers the same advantages as ESN IsoWhey Protein Isolate: a very low fat content, a very low carbohydrate content and a very high protein content. Fruity Whey Isolate is therefore also ideal for dieters. Like ESN IsoClear, Fruity Whey Isolate should be mixed with water. It can also be consumed before, during or after training. It is quickly absorbed by the body and has a high bioavailability. However, if you are looking for a fruity whey isolate, we generally recommend our IsoClear, as it tastes much better than the Fruity Whey Isolate.
Fat loss and diet
When dieting, you want to save as many calories as possible. It can therefore make sense to switch from a Designer Whey to an ESN IsoClear or an IsoWhey when dieting. This saves a few calories, as a few grams of fat and carbohydrates are omitted.
We would recommend the following ESN proteins in a diet. Of course, a calorie deficit is always a prerequisite.
Vegan
Are you vegan and want to cover your protein needs? Then we have some vegan products on offer.
We recommend this article in advance: Food supplements for vegans.
The following vegan protein products are suitable for you:
With our vegan products, we make sure that the products have a complete amino acid profile. This allows you to optimally supply yourself with all essential amino acids.
Lactose intolerance
We are aware that not everyone can tolerate lactose. That's why we have lactose-free proteins in our range.
If you are lactose intolerant, we recommend the following products:
- ESN IsoClear Whey Protein Isolate
- ESN Fruity Whey Isolate
- ESN Vegan Designer Protein
- ESN IsoClear Vegan
Gluten intolerance
The question often arises as to which protein powder is gluten-free. In principle, most of our protein powders are gluten-free. However, some varieties contain chunks or other additives. These pieces and additives may contain gluten. In principle, you will always find a detailed list of the individual ingredients (allergens are marked in bold) in the shop with the respective product under the item description and optionally also as a PDF file for download.
These products are always (as of 27.6.24) gluten-free:
