Vitamin B12 deficiency
If you are an athlete, you generally have a higher vitamin B12 requirement. In principle, the vitamin B12 requirement can be covered by your diet, but shortages can occur if you have an increased requirement due to intense physical exertion or certain diets, such as a vegetarian or vegan diet.
A deficiency is unfavorable because it can make you weak and tired, for example because not enough red blood cells are produced to transport oxygen through your body or your energy metabolism does not function normally. The unpleasant feeling is the lesser evil - an undersupply of vitamins can have long-term health consequences, such as anemia.
As vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal foods, vegetarians and vegans are particularly susceptible to a deficiency. However, vitamin B12 deficiency is also not uncommon among athletes. You can have your doctor check whether you have a deficiency with the help of a blood count. The following laboratory parameters are relevant for a meaningful determination of vitamin B12 status: Total vitamin B12, holo-transcobalamin (holo-TC) and methylmalonic acid (MMS) in the serum. Vitamin B12 is not examined as part of a complete blood count.
MHA complex
What is special about our vitamin B12 mouth spray? - It is highly dosed with 500 μg of vitamin B12 per spray in the form of a high-quality and optimally bioavailable MHA complex. The MHA complex solves the problem of high-dose isolated forms of cobalamin. If a cobalamin is taken on its own, the body may not utilize all of it and excrete the water-soluble vitamin again - this is not a bad thing in principle, but would mean a waste of money for you.
That's why we have developed our vitamin B12 MHA complex oral spray, which combines hydroxocobalamin (300 μg/spray), methylcobalamin (100 μg/spray) and adenosylcobalamin (100 μg/spray). The combination of both active forms of B12 and hydroxocobalamin, which can be stored and converted into the two active forms by the body as required, ensures an acute and long-term supply of vitamin B12 for your body.
Each form of cobalamin fulfills different tasks in the body: hydroxocobalamin has a particularly good ability to bind to transport molecules, allowing it to circulate in the body for a very long time until it is needed or converted. Methylcobalamin is an active and directly bioavailable form of B12 with a specific effect in the cell plasma. Among other things, it contributes to homocysteine metabolism. High homocysteine levels can have a negative effect on cardiovascular health. Adenosylcobalamin is also an active and directly bioavailable form of B12 that has a specific effect in the mitochondria. There it contributes in particular to energy metabolism.
FAQ Vitamin B12 Spray
Is there a recommendation as to what time of day (or meal) B12 should be taken?
There is no recommendation as to when you should take your vitamin B12. It is best to take it when you remember so that you can maintain a regular intake.
Why is your vitamin B12 spray dosed so high?
However, the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has not yet set an upper limit (maximum limit at which side effects occur). Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, which is why you excrete the excess vitamin B12 via your urine. An overdose is therefore hardly possible. A document from the Federal Office for Risk Assessment says the following:
‘To date, no adverse health effects have been identified for vitamin B12 that can be used to derive a LOAEL (Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level; lowest tested dose at which an adverse health effect was observed) or NOAEL (No Observed Adverse Effect Level; highest tested dose at which no adverse health effect was observed).’
We therefore maintain the current dosage.
Does the vitamin B12 spray need to be stored in the refrigerator?
No, we do not recommend storing it in the refrigerator.
